Zomato’s Co-founder Steps Down After 13 Years

Co-Founder

Akriti Chopra, co-founder and Chief People Officer (CPO) of Zomato, has resigned from the food-tech company after a 13-year journey. Zomato made the announcement via a regulatory filing, with Chopra’s resignation taking effect on September 27, 2024. She was instrumental in shaping the company, especially in its early days, and played a key role in Zomato’s legal and finance functions before being elevated to co-founder in 2021.

Chopra’s journey at Zomato began in 2011 as a Senior Manager in finance and operations. Over the years, she contributed significantly to the company, particularly when she served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Her tenure as CFO ended in 2020, when Akshant Goyal took over the position. Chopra was then promoted to co-founder, playing a critical role ahead of Zomato’s IPO in 2021.

Her departure adds to a recent trend of high-level exits at Zomato. Notably, two other co-founders left the company within the past two years—Gunjan Patidar, Chief Technology Officer, resigned in January 2023, while Mohit Gupta, who led the food delivery business, exited in November 2022.

Although the company has not commented on the specifics of Chopra’s next move, it was reported that she is stepping down to pursue other interests. Prior to joining Zomato, Chopra worked at PwC in the tax and regulatory practice, bringing valuable expertise to the table. During her 13 years at Zomato, she not only shaped the company’s internal teams but also guided it through significant challenges, such as regulatory issues and its IPO.

Zomato, a leader in India’s food-tech space, has seen its fair share of ups and downs, with increased competition from rivals like Swiggy. However, despite these challenges, the company remains one of India’s most recognizable food delivery brands. With Chopra’s exit, Zomato’s leadership will likely be under pressure to maintain momentum and ensure that the company continues to innovate in a highly competitive market.

While Akriti Chopra’s departure marks the end of an era for Zomato, it opens up new opportunities for the company to bring in fresh leadership. Whether Chopra’s future ventures will stay within the startup ecosystem or branch out remains to be seen, but her tenure at Zomato will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy.
