The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has recently confirmed two additional cases of the newly detected Mpox variant, clade Ib, bringing the total number of known cases in Britain to three. The initial case involved an individual who had recently returned from Africa, where mpox is more prevalent. Following their diagnosis, two household contacts were also found to be infected, highlighting the virus’s potential for transmission within close family settings.

What Is Clade Ib?

The clade Ib variant is considered more severe than the clade II variant that spread globally in 2022, particularly among specific communities. Unlike clade II, which mainly affected men who have sex with men, clade Ib appears capable of causing more intense symptoms. These symptoms range from flu-like illnesses to skin lesions that, in severe cases, can become fatal. The global health community is closely monitoring the spread of this variant due to its potential to impact more diverse groups and its presence outside of Africa.

How the UK Is Handling the Spread

All identified cases are currently receiving care in specialist facilities, and the UKHSA has reassured the public that the overall risk remains low. While mpox transmission typically requires close physical contact, authorities caution that additional cases may arise within affected households. The health agency has stated that they have well-prepared protocols to manage further cases if they appear.

Global Context

Mpox’s reemergence and new variants are being tracked globally by organizations such as the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2023, over 48,000 suspected cases and over a thousand deaths have been reported across 19 African countries, marking a 500% increase from the previous year. Cases of clade Ib have also been recorded in Germany, Sweden, India, and Thailand, indicating a potential for international spread.

While there are vaccines available for mpox, public health agencies encourage preventive measures and awareness to limit further transmission.
